Does my home have lead pipes?

Lead was commonly used for water pipes in homes built before the 1980s, so many older Dublin homes, especially period and early 20th-century houses, may still have them. Signs include dull grey pipes that are soft enough to scratch easily, often near the stopcock under the kitchen sink. A water test or a plumber's inspection can confirm it.

The HSE advises there is no safe level of lead in drinking water, so replacing lead pipes is worth doing.

What the grant covers

  • 100% of the approved cost, up to €5,000
  • The cost of proving you have lead pipes, such as a lab test or professional report, up to €200
  • Works costing less than €750 don't qualify

If you're an Uisce Éireann customer, its separate opt-in scheme can replace the lead pipe on the public side of your property once you've replaced yours.

  2. Get a quote from a plumber.
  3. Apply to your local council, for example Fingal or Dublin City Council.
  4. Have the work done once approved.
