How plumbing jobs should be done
Most plumbing jobs come down to finding where water is escaping or not getting to, and fixing the cause rather than the symptom. A drip under a sink is a quick job; a stain spreading on a ceiling can mean a concealed leak that needs tracing before anything is opened up. Where a job involves a gas boiler, only a Registered Gas Installer (RGI) can legally work on it.
What usually affects the price:
- Out-of-hours timing (nights, weekends and bank holidays cost more)
- Access to concealed pipework under floors or behind tiling
- Whether parts are in the van or need to be sourced
- Age of the system, especially lead or old galvanised pipework
- Making good after the repair (plastering, tiling, flooring)
What to check before you hire a plumber
- For any gas boiler or gas appliance work, ask for the installer's RGII registration number and check it on rgii.ie
- Ask whether the call-out fee includes the first hour of labour
- Get the price of parts confirmed before a replacement goes ahead
- For leaks, ask how the plumber will locate the source before opening walls or floors
- Keep photos and the invoice if you may need to make a home insurance claim

Frequently Asked Questions
Where is my stopcock?
In most Dublin houses the internal stopcock is under the kitchen sink, near where the supply pipe enters the house. There is usually also an external valve at the boundary under a small cover in the footpath. Knowing where both are before an emergency can save a lot of damage.
Does my home insurance cover a burst pipe?
Most home insurance policies cover sudden escape of water damage, but often not the cost of the repair to the pipe itself or gradual leaks. Check your policy wording and take photos before anything is removed.
Could my house still have lead pipes?
Homes built before about 1970 may still have lead supply pipes. Uisce Éireann can advise on the public side; a plumber can check and replace the pipework inside your boundary.
Can a plumber fix my gas boiler?
Only if they are a Registered Gas Installer. Many plumbers are RGI-registered, but always check before anyone works on a gas appliance.
How much does a plumber cost in Dublin?
