How tiling should be done
Good tiling depends on a flat, sound and waterproofed surface. In wet areas, especially showers, walls and floors should be tanked with a waterproof membrane before tiling. Large-format porcelain tiles need a flatter surface, the right adhesive and careful levelling to avoid lippage.
What usually affects the price:
- Tile size, type and pattern
- Area to be tiled
- Preparation (removing old tiles, levelling or tanking)
- Number of cuts and trims
- Grout, sealant and finishing
What to check before you hire a tiler
- Ask whether shower areas will be tanked before tiling
- Check how uneven walls or floors will be levelled
- Ask which adhesive and grout will be used for your tiles
- Confirm who supplies tiles, and order about 10% extra
- Ask to see photos of similar completed work

Frequently Asked Questions
How many extra tiles should I buy?
About 10% extra for straight layouts and 15% for diagonal or herringbone patterns, to allow for cuts and future repairs.
Can new tiles go over old tiles?
Sometimes, if the old tiles are firmly bonded and the wall can take the weight. In showers, stripping back and tanking is better.
Do showers need tanking?
Yes. Grout and tiles are not waterproof on their own, so a tanking membrane behind them prevents leaks and rot.
How soon can I use a newly tiled shower?
Usually 24 to 72 hours after grouting and sealing, depending on the products used.
How much does a tiler cost in Dublin?
It depends on the job. Our tiling cost guide lists typical Dublin prices for each service, from €1,500–€4,500 labour for bathroom tiling upwards.
