How painting jobs should be done
Most of the cost and quality of a paint job is in the preparation: filling, sanding, priming and dealing with damp or flaking surfaces before any finish coat goes on. Exterior work on Dublin houses has to cope with a wet climate, so the right primer and masonry paint make a big difference to how long it lasts. Homes built before about 1970 may have lead paint under newer layers, which must not be dry-sanded.
What usually affects the price:
- Amount of preparation and repair needed
- Ceiling heights and stairwells
- Number of colours and coats
- Woodwork, doors and skirting
- Access equipment for exterior and stairwell work
What to check before you hire a painter
- Ask exactly what preparation is included (filling, sanding, priming, caulking)
- Confirm the number of coats and the paint brand and range
- Ask how furniture and floors will be protected
- For older homes, ask how the painter handles possible lead paint
- For exterior work, confirm whether scaffolding or access equipment is included

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does exterior paint last in Dublin?
Around 7–10 years with good preparation and quality masonry paint. Coastal and exposed walls may need recoating sooner.
When is the best time to paint outside?
Late spring to early autumn, on dry days above about 8°C. Masonry paint needs dry walls and a few dry hours after application.
Can you paint over wallpaper?
It is possible, but seams and bubbles often show through. Stripping is usually the better finish.
What about lead paint in older homes?
Lead paint is common in homes built before about 1970. It should be wet-sanded or chemically stripped, never dry-sanded or burnt off indoors.
How much does a painter cost in Dublin?
It depends on the job. Our painting cost guide lists typical Dublin prices for each service, from €250–€450 per average room for interior painter upwards.
