Guides › Planning Permission

Do I Need Planning Permission for a Driveway?

Creating a new entrance onto a public road, or widening an existing one, generally needs planning permission in Ireland, and lowering the kerb needs council approval. Resurfacing an existing driveway usually doesn't, but drainage matters.

  • New or wider entrances usually need permission
  • Dropped kerbs need council approval
  • Resurfacing is usually fine
  • Plan drainage carefully

When you'll need permission

  • Creating a new vehicle entrance onto a public road
  • Widening an existing entrance
  • Work on a protected structure or in a conservation area

Lowering the footpath kerb (a dropped kerb) also needs approval from your council's roads department.

When it's usually fine

  • Resurfacing an existing driveway
  • Repairing or replacing paving within your property, without changing the entrance

Use permeable surfaces, or drain water into your own garden or a soakaway, rather than onto the road. Your council may have specific requirements.

Costs

Paved driveways in Dublin typically cost €70–€130 per square metre, and resin-bound driveways around €5,000–€15,000. See driveway paving.
